Brain Activity & Neurofeedback

brain.jpgBrain activity is both electrical and chemical. Numerous electrochemical reactions occur as a result of any given thought an individual may have. The brain actually is capable of producing approximately 400 billion actions at any given moment. We as humans are aware of maybe 2,000 of these.Thoughts can be classified as either positive or negative. Chemicals related to an emotion are attached to each thought and biochemicals are released throughout the body to react according to that certain emotion. An abundance of certain hormones will create an adverse effect on the cardiovascular system and immune system, prohibiting these systems to function effectively and too much of particular hormones can actually change the structure of the brain

The brain creates loops or ‘highways’ of information according to the external stimuli presented by the sensory system. If one has experienced a harmful situation, the brain will then constantly be on the lookout for danger. This is the body"s best defense mechanism. Therefore, when presented with external stimuli, the brain does not always take the time to process this information effectively, but instead will automatically trigger fight or flight mode an react instantaneously. It is therefore crucial for the brain to be ‘re-trained’ in these situations and able to choose healthier pathways involving effectively processing through the given information prior to a reaction.

Jenbiofeedback.jpgThe brain is a dynamic organ capable of change. Neurofeedback is a form of biofeedback which uses an electroencephalograph (EEG) to measure, monitor, and “feed back” information about electrical activity of the brain.Working in the same manner as biofeedback, non-invasive sensors are attached with conductance paste at various placements on the head. The participant can then ‘see’ the electrical activity of their brain and how this activity changes with certain thought patterns. Through operant conditioning, the person then is able to teach their brain how to fire differently and actually re-train pathways to combat traumatic experiences & negative self talk. The process allows the person to regulate their own brain activity to improve in overall mental performance, attention and concentration.

Expected Outcomes of Neurofeedback:
Icrease self control
Improve focus & attenstion
Improve mental clarity
Improve sleep
Increase motivation
Improve behavioral problems
Improve probem solving
Improve memory
Decrease impulsivenss
Easily manage distractions

Neurofeedback is helpful with the following:
ADD/ADHD
Traumatic Brain Injury/Head Trauma
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
Chronic Pain
Memory Problems
Seizure Disorders
Learning Disorders
Autism
