Biofeedback is a treatment modality used in conjuction with therapy. Biofeedback teaches patients to control their
body’s responses to various emotional and physical conditions. The biofeedback equipment continuously measures and displays information regarding the person’s
physiological state (i.e. heart rate variability, skin temperature, skin conductance, and electrical activity of the
muscles). The therapist teaches the patient how to control these parameters. With the knowledge of self regulation, patients can diminish
the impact of stress on their daily life and improve their overall wellbeing.
How Does it Work? Noninvasive sensors are placed on the body to measure the parameters (heart rate variability, skin temperature, skin conductance,
and electrical activity of the muscles). The sensors are connected to a biofeedback device
which calculates the data and to a computer which provides the displays. The therapist teaches effective techniques
to enhance self regulation under various conditions.
